Dr Andrew Bamber

Dr Andrew Bamber specialises in working with children and their families in the context of Learning Disability, Autism and additional needs (e.g. ADHD and Neurodivergence). Andrew has held highly specialist NHS roles in Hertfordshire, Bristol and Gwent, where he has undertaken complex assessment and treatment work with families, schools, hospitals and care homes.

Andrew is highly experienced in working with children of all ages to support with their needs, such as family relations, behaviours of concern, anxiety and low mood, anger management, sleep training, avoidant and restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID), and support with feeding and toileting for children with complex additional needs.

Andrew offers enabling assessment and therapeutic intervention, with the aim of establishing a shared understanding of a young person’s needs and coproducing a coherent support plan to improve the quality of life for the young person and their family.

Andrew draws on his understanding of Behavioural, Systemic, Trauma and Attachment models and has further therapeutic training in Systemic Family Therapy, Positive Behaviour Support and Circle of Security. Andrew has further assessment training in the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS) and the Autism Diagnostic Interview (ADI-r).

Core Offers

  • Andrew provides specialist formulation based assessment to help understand a range of challenges that young people might experience in the context of learning disability, Autism and ADHD (and more broadly Neurodivergence). These challenges may be in the area of:

    • family relations

    • behaviours of concern

    • anxiety and low mood

    • anger management

    • sleep training

    • avoidant and restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID)

    • feeding and toileting

    • sensory needs

    Andrew works with individuals, parents, special guardians, foster carers, social care and school systems. Formal cognitive assessment such as the WAIS, ADOS and ADI-r, can be part of this assessment when relevant.

    Following an agreed number of information gathering sessions Andrew will share the emerging understanding of the factors involve in the concern you are holding and  suggest recommendations (which will be offered in a written or verbal format) for next steps. These recommendations may include further therapeutic intervention work with Andrew or signposting onto other resources.

  • Andrew offers ongoing therapeutic intervention for children and their families experiencing Behaviours of Concern (challenging behaviour). This type of Intervention is likely to follow on from a formulation based assessment. These regular psychology sessions are likely to be focused on working with the parents or caregivers in order to support the implementation of support strategies around the young person. Online sessions can be offered nationwide and home visits are available for families local to Bristol.

    Andrew has a playful and creative approach to working with children and always puts the child and family and the centre. Andrew adopts a strengths-based approach to coproducing the assessment and intervention with the family.

  • Andrew specialises in offering supervision and consultancy to people who work in the fields of Learning Disability, Autism, Neurodivergence and Mental Health.

    This may be monthly supervision that focuses on clinical practice, the impact of the work and professional development. It may also be that you are looking for consultancy around a more specific time limited theme or issue .

    Andrew offers a space that is restorative for your wellbeing as well as attending to your growth as a practitioner and safe practice. Andrew brings his skill to reflect with you on the individual level of your work and how this is housed within a wider nest of relationships and wider system.

  • Andrew is trained to facilitate the Circle of Security Parenting Programme.

    This engaging program is designed to help you build deeper connections with the children in your life, giving you the tools to understand their emotions and respond with confidence. Through interactive discussions, video-based learning, and real-life strategies, you'll discover how to provide the safe, supportive environment children need to thrive.
